Congratulations to Gennean Bolen, the winner of the $9,000 Educational Employees Credit Union Scholarship for an incoming student at San Joaquin College of Law.

Gennean already has a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership and Management and teaches at Fresno City College, but feels a law degree would give her even more opportunities to serve her community, both through advocacy and leadership. She feels all citizens need to increase their literacy of judicial matters. Over the past decade, she has worked with agencies ranging from the NAACP to the Environmental Justice Advocacy Group. She wants to use her J.D. to help those currently disadvantaged or marginalized in the Valley.

In addition to the $9,000 scholarship for an incoming student, EECU also provides a $4,500 scholarship for a second year student at SJCL. Kuljit Singh is this year’s winner. He emigrated from India as a schoolboy who spoke only scattered a smattering of English, but has since soared, winning high praise from the coach of Fresno State’s Mock Trial Team. He will also be published in this year’s edition of the San Joaquin Agricultural Review. He has just completed an internship with the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office, but hopes to do another internship in business law before he graduates.

Both the Law School and EECU see the value of education as more than just a vehicle to personal enrichment; educated communities see enhancements ranging from economic growth to cultural enrichment, improved health, and decreased crime. The partnership also enhances EECU’s ongoing outreach efforts, which include its Student Grant Program, sponsorship of Excellence in Education Awards for the Valley’s top educators and support of Central Valley Honor Flight.
