The Clovis City Council approved a request from the Cook Land Company and the California 9/11 Memorial Foundation to rename Pelco Way to Never Forget Lane. The motion  passed during the city council meeting on Monday, April 8.

Jerry Cook, president of the California 9/11 board, said it was excellent that the council embraced what the board is doing.

“The street name change is just part of a more important picture, that is recognizing first responders and passing along the education to the next generation of what 9/11 meant,” Cook said. “9/11 meant we lost 2,977 people in the Twin Towers, 243 were first responders trying to save others.”

Cook added that the street name change is also in honor of the 125 military people who were lost at the Pentagon.

Cook said Clovis has done more than any other city outside of New York in honoring 9/11 victims.

“We pick up that challenge to honor those lost in 9/11 and remember them and educate that next generation,” Cook said. “The fact that other communities don’t pick up that responsibility is lost on me.”

The California 9-11 Memorial in Clovis was built by Pelco and spearheaded by the late CEO David McDonald as a permanent monument to honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks. Every year at the memorial site, a group of citizens, first responders and military personnel perform a ceremony to honor the victims of 9/11.
