Upgraded classification could mean a reduction in insurance rates
The City of Clovis is pleased to announce that it was recently surveyed by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) to determine its Public Protection Classification (PPC) and effective February 1, 2015, the City of Clovis will be upgraded to a Class 2 rating.
Using this rating scale, ISO objectively reviews the fire protection capabilities of the community and assigns a Public Protection Classification number from 1 to 10. Class 1 represents exemplary fire protection in the community and Class 10 indicates that the area’s fire suppression programs do not meet minimum recognition criteria. ISO evaluates a community approximately once every 10 years or when major department changes occur. The City of Clovis received a Class 4 rating in 1988, a Class 3 rating in 2001 and in 2015, will be upgraded to a Class 2.
The Fire Suppression Rating Schedule allots credit to three major features of an area’s fire protection system by evaluating the community’s communications, fire protection and water systems. In all three major areas, the City of Clovis received excellent ratings. Out of over 48,000 fire protection areas in the nation, approximately 800 have a Class 2 or better rating, of which 80 are in California.
ISO is the leading supplier of statistical, underwriting and actuarial information to the property/casualty insurance industry and is used by most insurers to calculate the premiums for residential, commercial and industrial subscribers. The City of Clovis recommends that residents and business owners contact their local insurance provider to ensure they are aware of the upgraded classification and to confirm proper credit is used in their calculation of rates on properties within the city limits. Research has shown that in some cases, there is a minor reduction in rates for residential property owners and more substantial reductions for commercial property owners. If your provider does not recognize the ISO rating in their calculation or does not take the improved classification in their rates, consider researching providers that do.
The improved rating represents the continued commitment on the part of the city to provide the most effective and efficient services to our citizens.
