CIF Cancels All Spring Sports

The California Interscholastic Federation, the governing body for all high school sports in California, announced on Friday, April 3 that spring sports will not resume this year.

“Based on the recent statements issued by Governor Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, regarding schools turning to distance learning for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) does not see an avenue for the spring sports season to continue,” Ron Nocetti the Executive Director of CIF said in a statement posted on the CIF website.

This means that even if Clovis Unified School District resumed in-person schooling, athletics will not continue. Spring sports include: Baseball, Softball, Boys Golf, Boys Tennis, Boys Volleyball, and Track and Field.

Previously on March 17, the CIF announced they had not determined a course of action for their Spring sports following a scheduled meeting of the group’s 10 Section Commissioners. The group of commissioners met again today and came to the conclusion that given the circumstances, cancelling all spring sports would be the best course of action.

“We understand this is disappointing for everyone involved in education-based athletics and empathize with our student-athletes and all who are impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak,” Nocetti said.

“As always, our top priority is everyone’s ongoing health and safety during this challenging time, and we all look forward to the day when education-based athletics resumes,” Nocetti added.

CUSD athletic events have been suspended since March 12 and CUSD announced earlier this week that their current school closures would extend into May.
